HOUSE LOUW/ DELPORT – GROENKLOOF

This hillside home, designed like a high-level penthouse, embraces panoramic views of Pretoria while seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings through earthy materials and low-profile architecture. With a linear layout tailored for art display, north-facing glass walls, and a garden that extends the living space, the design combines environmental sensitivity, light-filled interiors, and elegant simplicity.

We wanted to build a compact open home, with enough space for our art collection consisting of paintings and sculptures collected over the years. We wanted an easy living house from where we can enjoy the view, and go cycling in the green belt bordering the property. The house is situated in a neighborhood we love and have lived in for a long time.

The house with all rooms being glass-fronted and leading onto wooden decks is perfectly designed for our lifestyle. Nowhere in the house are you cut off from any other part, and the layout is well suited for entertaining. I designed the garden in such way that house and garden are integrated.

This house is like a high level penthouse absorbing the unobstructed views of Pretoria from a small, steep, subdivided stand bordering a green belt. The site was terraced to provide a single level layout. The linear plan provides all living areas and bedrooms north of a gallery which doubles as circulation space and space to house an extensive art collection. Room for exhibiting art in the form of pictures and sculptures was a requirement from the client.

The house is unpretentious and unobtrusive in its setting against the hill, barely visible from the street. It becomes part of the hill and responds to its environment through design and choice of earthy finishes and materials.

A visitor’s ramp leading from the basement parking makes a turn towards the front door, and reveals as a surprise the view through the glass front door. Throughout the house one is aware of this view. All rooms feature a glass skin to the north. Sliding doors open onto decks, linking with the indigenous garden designed by the landscape architect client. The garden becomes an extension of the house.
